"Digitised glass slides of the noted Backhouse plant nursery, Holgate, York. The original slides are held by the Borthwick Institute for Archives (reference BN). Dated to circa 1891, based on the inscription \\\"V. '91\\\" one one slide. They show the alpine rock garden in at least two seasons of the year (several images show the garden in snow). Other images depict members of the Backhouse family (and, in particular, their two dogs). Backhouse nursery was at the height of its fame under James Backhouse V (1861-1945) in the period up to 1890. One of the images possibly depicts this James Backhouse, with his wife. The nursery occupied the Holgate site from 1853 until 1955, when the firm finally closed. Part of the site is now occupied by West Bank Park."
